Poolside fun is one of the best perks of warm weather, and if you are lucky enough to have a pool in your Jensen Beach home, you and your family and friends probably really enjoy it during those blazing hot Florida summers. Many people consider their dogs to be four-legged family members, so there’s a good chance your pooch will be out there with you. There are a few things you’ll want to be aware of when it comes to keeping your furry buddy safe around pools. Here are a few key points to remember.

Pool Stairs

The first thing you should do is make absolutely sure your dog knows where the pool stairs are. Our canine friends aren’t built to pull themselves over pool ledges, and a dog that accidentally slips into the water may exhaust himself swimming in circles or trying to climb out. Obese or senior dogs, as well as dogs with poor vision, are particularly at risk here. Get into the water with your furry pal, and carry or guide him to the stairs the first time. Practice with your dog by having him swim to the stairs from different points in the pool. It may help to put a potted plant or a tied floating device near the stairway to serve as markers, and it wouldn’t hurt to give your pooch some treats near the pool exit. There are also products on the market that can make the pool area safer for dogs, such as include safety fences and doggie ramps.

Pool Coverings

Pool covers can be very dangerous for dogs. Your pooch could jump on top of it, and become trapped, or get caught under it. Make sure your pool cover is completely secured and dog proof, and that it is strong enough to hold your pooch’s weight.

Chlorine

Rinse off your furry buddy after he is done swimming. Chlorine can cause your pup’s fur to dry out. It can also burn his eyes or that cute nose.

Pool Water

Don’t let your pup drink pool water. If Fido tends to gulp it down before you can stop him, keep fresh water near the pool for him. If that doesn’t work, you may want to restrict your pup’s access to the pool area, as pool water can make your pup quite sick.

Enjoy the weather, and by all means let your dog enjoy your pool too. Just make sure to take the proper precautions to keep your canine buddy safe around the water, and remember never to leave your dog near your Jensen Beach pool unsupervised.
